The goal of tripling global renewables capacity by 2030 – as agreed at the COP28 conference in Dubai in late 2023 – means the race is on to upscale the deployment of wind, solar and energy storage. Global renewable power capacity increased by 585 GW in 2024, an increase of over just 15 per cent. Solar energy accounted for 452 GW of the new capacity, with wind energy also accounting for a massive 113 GW. The progress made by wind is exemplified by the fact, wind generation is expected to surpass global nuclear electricity generation in 2025. Meanwhile, the energy storage industry also expanded at a rapid rate, with the global market adding 175.4 GWh of capacity in 2024.
However, despite the upward trajectory, significant hurdles remain. Delays to permitting, disruptions in the supply chain, and grid instability are among the key challenges that continue to make life difficult for renewables and energy storage project developers, in addition to various cost pressures. Meanwhile, the wind industry, in particular, faces the challenge of how to respond to the growth of the established renewable energy technologies, such as solar, and the newer technologies including battery storage, floating wind and green fuels. This creates a complex picture for banks and institutional investors that are seeking to deploy capital into both projects and companies while mitigating their own risks. How can the renewables industry address these concerns to achieve its full potential?

The ways and means through which clean infrastructure projects are brought to market, and financed, is undergoing a profound shift. What are investors looking for? Are the requirements of debt and equity in harmony? Is the market correcting and are we learning from our mistakes?
Increasing deployment of wind, solar and energy storage are seemingly good things for the energy transition, but there are significant roadblocks that must be overcome to be successful. This panel will debate what needs to be done to achieve ambitious goals and discuss what mechanisms are in place to pave the way for success.
Development activity in European onshore wind remains patchy. Despite EU initiatives to support the sector, global growth remains largely focused on China. Does this mean EU onshore wind development is consigned to the back burner? And if so, how can existing portfolios be better optimised? Moreover, will the recent lift of UK development make the territory more attractive again? And with all of this, to what extent can energy storage optimise onshore wind or co-located project development reinvigorate growth?
What are the global trends in project finance across wind, solar and storage? What will the interest rate environment look like in the next 5 years? What are the possibilities for more pre-FID financing and what impact would it have? What is the state of investor appetite for investment across the renewable energy sector? What do financing/structuring trends for transactions look like? And should we, within all of this, expect any material investment in existing EU grid infrastructure?
Developers, investors and project underwriters are aware of the risks posed by extreme weather events, but predicting and mitigating the financial impacts of these events is far harder. As the scale of developments increases and the climate keeps getting warmer, companies need a better understanding of how the risks and costs are increasing. How are extreme weather risks changing? What is the financial impact on companies? Can businesses collaborate in new ways to address these challenges? And are smarter technological solutions the answer?
The booming data centre industry, with its power hungry demands, represents a major opportunity for renewable energy infrastructure developers. However, this trend amplifies existing generation and transmission challenges – specifically, grid bottlenecks and load balancing. Against this backdrop, how does the current energy generation and storage strategy need to evolve? How do grid operators best prioritise connectivity requests and to what extend is the advent of new data centre infrastructure helping or hindering the energy transition?
Will the recently published UK Clean Power 2030 Action Plan pave the way for future clean power success in the UK? What are the main action points and is the new Government taking it seriously? How might the execution of this impact future development? To what extent is new project success contingent on better integration with energy storage and what is the role of battery balancing?
Discover the latest key trends currently shaping the energy storage market and look forward to emerging technologies, markets and investment patterns to understand which strategies can give you a competitive edge. What are the main barriers to the wider deployment of energy storage and how can they be overcome? What is the current outlook for co-located projects? What are the latest trends in energy storage investment? Which are currently the most attractive markets? How is the evolution of the energy storage market impacting on the structure of project financings in the sector? What is best practice for maximising returns? Who are the winners and losers right now?
Effective power trading strategies are now an essential consideration for all energy storage asset owners and owner/developers from the broader clean energy market. Gain expert insights on energy storage trading.
What are the latest trends in energy storage trading? What are the key elements of effective energy storage trading? How can successful energy storage assets make wind and solar portfolios more investible? What new opportunities might emerge in energy storage trading?
Martin Neubert from CIP joins us to talk through his experience and give us insight into getting a renewable energy project online in the current climate. What is his view on UK and EU auction frameworks? What changes would he like to see made in future rounds? Are there any updates to CIP’s project plans? How is the team solving the challenges they face from FID’s to today?
