Australia starts consultation on 20GW offshore wind zone

February 20, 2024

The Australian government has started consultation about a development zone off the coast of southwest Western Australia with potential for up to 20GW of offshore wind projects.

Chris Bowen, Australia’s minister for climate change and energy, said the 7,674 square kilometre zone was an ideal location for offshore wind due to high speed winds from the Indian Ocean. Comments on the proposed area can be submitted until 3rd May 2024.

Bowen said: “Offshore wind will be a critical new clean energy industry for Western Australians as electricity demand increases, helping to provide thousands of jobs along the way.”

He added: “The Albanese Government is committed to genuine consultation on offshore wind. That’s why we want communities, industry and businesses to have their say on an offshore wind area off [Western Australia] from the very beginning.”
