California plans $6.1bn grid upgrades for renewables

April 4, 2024

California’s grid operator has announced plans for $6.1bn of transmission upgrades to support the growth of renewables, including offshore wind.

The California Independent System Operator said its proposals would help the state to reach its goal of installing over 85GW of new renewables capacity by 2035, including 38GW of solar, 21GW of geothermal and 3GW of wind.

CAISO said 19 of the planned 26 upgrades would help ensure grid reliability as renewable energy capacity increases, with three transmission lines totalling $4.6bn intended to support the connection of floating wind farms to the state grid.

CAISO’s board of governors is due to consider the draft plan next month.
