China’s first ever large-scale sodium-ion battery project has begun operation in Nanning, Guangxi.

The  2.5 MW/10 MWh project represents the first phase of China Southern Power Grid’s 100MW Vulin project.

The project will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 50,000 tonnes, and meet the electricity needs of 35,000 residential users, China Southern Power Grid said.

“Compared with lithium-ion battery energy storage,sodium-ion battery energy storage raw materials have abundant reserves, are easy to extract, are low-cost, and have better performance under low temperature conditions” a China Southern Power Grid statement said.

The company said the sodium-ion battery can charge 90 per cent in 12 minutes.
