EU approves €3bn for German hydrogen network

June 24, 2024

The European Commission has approved Germany’s plan to provide €3bn backing under European Union state aid rules to support a hydrogen transmission network project.

The Hydrogen Core Network scheme is intended to be a long-distance network of hydrogen pipelines to transport the fuel in Germany, and support the growth of low-carbon hydrogen in the country by 2030.

The network is also set to connect to the EU-wide European hydrogen backbone infrastructure project.

The HCN scheme involves both repurposing existing gas pipelines to transport hydrogen, and building new pipelines and compressor stations. The scheme’s first pipeline is due to be operational next year.
