June 26, 2024

Mercury Energy has ordered 36 Vestas turbines for the 155MW second phase of its Kaiwea Downs wind farm in New Zealand.

Vestas is set to start delivering the turbines in the fourth quarter of 2025, with commissioning scheduled to start in early 2026. The first phase of Kaiwera downs completed in November 2023 with headline capacity of 43MW.

Danny Nielsen, senior vice president and country head of Vestas Australia and New Zealand, said: “Upon completion of stage two, Kaiwera Downs will continue to accelerate the country’s decarbonisation ambitions. We are pleased that our industry-leading people, wind turbines and sustainable energy solutions can contribute to this.”

Phil Gibson, executive general manager portfolio at Mercury, said: “We’re looking forward to pushing ahead with this project alongside the Vestas team, and our other delivery partners including Higgins and Electronet. Together, we will have added more than 400MW of renewables into New Zealand’s electricity mix once the Kaiwera Downs wind farm is complete.”
