RWE plans floating solar at 800MW OranjeWind

March 4, 2024

RWE Renewables has committed to add a 5MW floating solar facility at its 800MW OranjeWind (Hollandse Kust West VII) offshore wind project off the Dutch coast.

Research work has started today on the floating solar array, which is being developed by the Nautical Sunrise consortium using floating solar panels from Dutch firm SolarDuck. It is backed by the European Union’s scientific research initiative Horizon Europe.

The work is being coordinated by the Dutch Marine Energy Centre. The Nautical Sunrise consortium also includes Blunova, Bridon-Bekaert, Deltares, Hasselt University, KU Leuven, Oxford PV, SINTEF Industry, SINTEF Ocean, The Catalonia Institute for Energy Research, INESC TEC, and WavEC Offshore Renewables.

RWE is scheduled to commission the OranjeWind offshore wind farm in the Dutch North Sea by 2027. RWE and SolarDuck are also working on a floating solar pilot project off the Dutch coast, called Project Merganser.
