Trump pledges executive order to stop offshore wind

Donald Trump has pledged to issue an executive order to halt offshore wind development in US waters if he wins a second term as president this year.

The former president told a rally in New Jersey on Saturday that offshore wind farms kill birds and whales, and he would “make sure that that ends on day one” of a second presidential term.

The comment suggests that the anti-wind Trump will take a more aggressive position to halt offshore wind than in his first term, when the industry expanded despite delays in offshore permitting processes.

His approach would be in stark contrast to the Biden administration’s supportive stance. The US Department of the Interior last month proposed 18GW of offshore leasing rounds over the next five years, while Ørsted and Eversource Energy completed the first utility-scale US offshore wind farm, the 132MW South Fork Wind, in March.
