RWE has placed a firm order with Vestas for turbines for the 660MW first phase of its Nordseecluster project in Germany.

The Danish turbine maker was named preferred supplier for the two-phase 1.6GW scheme in the North Sea in February 2023, and signed the conditional contract for both phases last month.

The first phase is set to be made up of 44 15MW turbines, which are due to be commissioned in 2026.

Nils de Baar, president of northern and central Europe at Vestas, said: “We are pleased to be involved in this pivotal project for Europe’s offshore wind industry which is also a reflection of our commitment to promoting clean energy solutions. Vestas remain dedicated to leading the shift towards a more sustainable future.”

Thomas Michel, chief operating officer at RWE Offshore Wind, said: “We are very pleased to enter the execution phase for our Nordseecluster A project – which itself is already a great achievement. Many thanks to all involved. Now all focus is on delivery and we are excited about the future cooperation laying ahead of us.”
