Developers completed 17GW of wind farms in the European Union in 2023 but the continent is still falling far short of the 30GW needed annually, WindEurope has reported.
The trade association has reported that 14GW of onshore and 3GW of offshore wind farms were completed in 2023, which is an annual record. Germany led the way with 3.2GW of new wind installations in 2023, ahead of the Netherlands and Sweden.
WindEurope also said wind farms represented 19% of electricity production in the EU in 2023.
However, it added 30GW was needed each year between now and 2030 if the EU is to meet its 2030 climate and energy security goals. WindEurope said the Wind Power Package signed by 26 EU energy ministers in late 2023 needed to drive a significant increase in annual installations.
